Farooq's Journey To Adoption
5/25/2019-
On May 10, 2019  Be A Good Dog University's Canine Education Instructor, Trina, visited the Sedalia Animal Shelter and her attention was directed towards Farooq, a very large black lab mix. After watching the dog walker struggle with him at the end of a leash, she immediately added him to her Behavior Modification roster. Later that day, it was observed that he was dog-aggressive and she was informed that he was not included in any group play. The first and foremost observation was that he had intense energy with little outlet, which contributed to his rambunctious behavior as well as the dog aggression. Upon further inquiry, she was informed that he had only been neutered in the last 3 weeks, and therefore, probably had some hormonal influences. She was also given a brief background of the conditions he was rescued from and determined he has had very limited socialization. More assessment would be needed to construct his personalized behavior modification plan.

On May 25th, 2019, Trina returned to the shelter to spend one on one time with Farooq. He was easily directed to the exit of the kennel area, giving no attention to the roaring barking coming from the other dogs, indicating his ability to ignore when he has a clear goal in mind. Once outside in the gated play yard, he was eager to engage in fetching games. She blew bubbles to see if it interest him but it seemed unimportant to him at the time as he was just excited to have someone to play with. After several laps around the area and a cool drink, she practiced "Sit" and "Watch me" while using a whistle to condition a "recall" response. He did great! Although that was a quick session, it was time to leash up and walk around the available path that stretches across the back area of the property. He loved getting out into the grass, taking in the smells and feeling the soft, moist dirt beneath his feet. There was very little pulling on the leash and for most of the walk, he stayed right at her side. Returning to the entrance of the shelter, she noticed another dog in the lobby meeting & greeting potential adopters so she and Farooq waited patiently in a small area until the coast was clear.

Farooq demonstrated the ability and eagerness to work and stay calm. Recommendations were made to have him moved to a more isolated area of the kennel, closer to a sound machine to help him relax. Once returned to his kennel, he was rewarded with a soft-chew to help ease him into a calmer state after his session.
More sessions are being formed and his progress will be updated!
